Milan has a kind of understated charm that may take a while to appreciate. Although the city is classed as the business district of Italy, the centre of the city is very pretty and of course their shopping is as good as it gets.
We spent 3 days in Milan and 1 day in Lake Como. Each of these cities had its unique beauty.
We actually got to Milan late on Saturday evening, so we freshened up as soon as we got to the hotel and then we were straight out to explore city at night. We headed to the Duomo, which is one of Milan’s most significant sights to see. The Duomo was impressive, we actually headed back to the Duomo the next morning so that we could explore inside and climb to the top – which was scary but very cool as we saw the whole of Milan from the top.
Where to eat?
One of my favourite places that we ate at whilst we were in Milan was Il Mercato del Duomo (www.ilmercatodelduomo.it) It’s located in Piazza del Duomo which was just outside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. There was several floors, and each floor had different foods so theres a wide variety of food to choose from.
Milan is a fashion capital, so of course you can imagine it was fashion galore. The main shopping centre in Milan is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The Galleria is one of the oldest malls in the world. The Galleria has some luxury shops like Gucci, YSL and Prada and if you get tired of all the shopping you can always sit at Gucci cafe and people watch. However, if you’re not looking for luxury shopping, there is plenty of high street shops just round the corner.
Como is one of Italy’s famous lake destinations and is about a 40 minute train ride from Milan. We headed up to Como on the Morning and spent the whole day there. We got the boat which took us all around the Lakes, funnily enough the boat was actually the locals transportation service. To be honest we didn’t actually realise that we could get off the boat, until we got to the village Torno. Lake Como is very picturesque and I would recommend that if you go to Milan, you should dedicate one of your days to visit Lake Como.
